" Viral Infections Linked to Birth Injuries"

Researchers from Adelaide’s Women’s & Children’s Hospital in Australia have discovered that viral infections, such as herpes, are associated with high blood pressure during pregnancy.
These revelations mark a significant step in unraveling the mystery of what causes blood pressure to increase during pregnancy.
Research Links Viral Infections and CP
The research was conducted by the South Australian Cerebral Palsy Research Group and the work demonstrates that viral infections like herpes can be linked to pre-term birth and pre-eclampsia.
The presence of viral nucleic acid was reportedly found in blood samples from 1326 newborn babies.
400 of these babies were diagnosed as having cerebral palsy.
“This is an exciting finding and further studies are now required to look at the link between viral exposure in pregnancy and adverse outcomes, such as premature delivery and cerebral palsy,” explains Professor Alastair MacLennan, the head of the research group.
Problems in Pregnancy
Statistics show that pregnancy hypertension happens in 10 percent of first pregnancies worldwide.
If left untreated, the affects could be detrimental to both the mother and child.
“We are just beginning to understand the interaction and importance of exposure to viruses and genetic susceptibility to infection both in pregnancy and the newborn,” says Associate Professor Paul Goldwater.
