Tax Break for Families of Disabled Proposed

When the family of a child who is living with cerebral palsy is given the option of putting their loved one in an institution or caring for them at home, many families choose the latter. Although, by doing so, they often take on the responsibility of more work in addition to more expenses. Sandra Lynch is one of the many parents throughout the country that has been put in this position, and although she by no means regrets her decision, she is now taking action to ease the burden bestowed on others in her same position.

Mother Takes Action

If Lynch had made the decision to put her daughter into a facility, the state would have paid for the care she received. For this reason, Lynch is asking the state to offer tax abatements for families who make modifications to their homes in order to care for their disabled children.

How Tax Abatement Could Help the State

Lynch believes that a tax break could be beneficial to people in her situation who are essentially saving the state money by taking care of their loved ones in their own homes. “I felt torn and pushed toward institutionalizing my children,” explains Lynch. “But there is such a difference between the cost to the state of that and supporting families who keep their children at home.”

Idea Supported by Senator

Lynch reportedly approached Sen. Sam Caligiuri with the idea, which includes a bill that would allow the tax abatement. “The legislation is alive and well and there seems to be some interest in it.
