Stroke therapy being used to help children with cerebral palsy

For the thousands of infants born with cerebral palsy every year, new therapies are constantly being tried to help improve the functioning and independence of patients. Since cerebral palsy usually affects body movement and muscle coordination, a psychologist thought a therapy for stroke patients might also help cerebral palsy patients. The doctor hoped the results would be even better with the children because of the more plastic nervous system they have over adults. The first cerebral palsy patient the therapists tried the therapy on underwent a constraint-induced therapy. By putting a cast on the child's good arm, the patient was forced to use the affected arm. The therapists hope to continue making improvements and think the treatment works best when started on a child as early as possible.
