Forum for Children with Special Needs

The Le Bonheur Children’s Medical Center is reportedly sponsoring a daylong forum that has been created to help the parents of children with special needs. The event, known as “Identifying Resources for Children with Special Needs,” will take place this week and enable parents to speak with therapists, cerebral palsy attorneys, and neuropsychologists.

Becoming Better Informed

The forum has been designed to help the families of children with disabilities and other special needs determine how to care for and understand their child best. “When you have a special-needs child, the first thing you get is a diagnosis,” says Renee Dominguez, whose son, William has epilepsy and several learning disorders. “Some physicians are fabulous. But some just hand you a diagnosis and send you out the door with a pat on the shoulder and a ‘good luck.’” Last year marked the first time that the forum was held and it reportedly attracted more than 150 participants.

An Event that Lends Support

According to federal health officials, 17 percent of Americans who are 17 and younger are living with disabilities. These disabilities in children range from cerebral palsy to Down syndrome and autism. “We are all about empowering families to go from the shock and grief of the diagnosis to plugging in to the right community resources and learning how to navigate the different systems,” explains Laural Ryan, who helps with the event.
