"
Premature Babies Show Signs of Impairment"

March 18, 2008

A recent follow up study showed that many babies born prematurely, before 33 weeks gestation, have life altering disabilities.

The reports are shocking to many considering all of the advances that have been made in terms of technology and medicine in the past decade.

Children Show Signs of Disability

A number of the children analyzed supposedly had signs of both cognitive and neuromotor impairment and some suffered from life changing disabilities, like cerebral palsy.

These children reportedly needed specialized care by the time they were five years old.

Reports Show Progress for CP Patients

Although this news seems grim to many, new reports do show that cerebral palsy had only been detected in nine percent of the children in this particular cohort.

Researchers claim that there hasn’t been an increase in cerebral palsy cases in the general population for a long period of time.

“So progress has been realized in the entire population of children, even if in this particular group of very preterm children the frequency of cerebral palsy is important,” says Dr. Beatrice Larroque, from INSERM, Research Unit on Prenatal Health and Women’s Health.

Premature Birth Statistics

The cohort shows that cerebral palsy was evident in about nine percent of those who were born prematurely.

Statistics also show that more males were diagnosed with cerebral palsy than females.
