New Treatment for Cerebral Palsy Patients in U.S

After Tracy Christensen’s daughter Colby was born with cerebral palsy, her family began making trips to Poland so Colby could receive an intense therapy that is said to increase progress in patients. When Christensen realized the huge impact that the therapy technique, which is popular with Polish doctors, was having on Colby’s health, she decided to begin a similar therapy program in Utah. “We brought some Polish therapists over to help train us, bought some equipment from Poland and we’re just doing it here so that families don’t have to make that trip,” she says.

Intense Therapy

Christensen and her staff became well trained working first hand with Polish therapists before opening the clinic, which offers intensive strength training and other types of therapy for patients with cerebral palsy. Using special equipment like therapeutic cages and orthopedic suits, this type of physical therapy has proven to be effective due to its extensive four hour sessions, five days a week that help with patients alignment, posture and balance. Research has shown that these sessions prove to have a better success rate than regular physical therapy because patients endure the therapy for three consecutive weeks at a time, which generally helps them to progress faster. Christensen has named the program the “Now I can Program” and it has taken off in America with patients like Alex Nicely claiming he can now walk and is no longer confined to a wheelchair since joining the program. The Now I Can program can be applied to both children and adults and cost approximately $2,000 per week though Christensen says that insurance companies are starting to cover the benefitial treatment.
