Parents of girl with cerebral palsy fights against Colorado school district
The parents of eight-year old Emma Holmes may file suit against the Fort Collins school district to let their daughter, who has cerebral palsy, attend kindergarten for a fourth year in a row, according to KDVR, the Denver Fox affiliate.
School officials want to move Emma on to first grade, despite her lack of improvement, but her parents insist that she is interacting well with her fellow kindergartners and is content where she is.
The Holmes family was involved in a similar dispute last year with the school district. KDVR reports that they have not indicated how long they want their daughter to stay in the same grade.
The young girl cannot see, walk or talk because of her condition, which is birth injury that affects the brain and nervous system.
Cerebral palsy causes children to have impaired motor skills and muscle development, and occurs in one out of every 303 births, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
