Horns Used for Oral-Motor Therapy"

February 26, 2008

According to therapists, horns can be used as more than toys and have been proven to be beneficial in speech and language therapy.

Research shows that these devices can be useful in correcting articulation disorders, speech clarity and breath control in patients with Down syndrome and cerebral palsy.

How Horns Help

Oral-motor therapy is used when a muscle can’t perform a specific skill and the muscles need to be exercised.

Treating patients with traditional speech therapy without practicing proper muscle control isn’t always successful.

Using toy horns as therapy devices has not only proven to be helpful, but is also fun for patients.

Different Levels of Therapy

There are reportedly 80 different types of horn devices that can be used in therapy and depending upon the condition of the patient, several can be used in treatment at once.

Some clients start with the first horn and work their way up to complete the entire hierarchy, while others with specific needs use individual horns to address their particular issues.

Horns are also being used to help with drooling, seeing as they help patients to become more aware of their lips and teach them how to retract saliva back over the tongue.
