A Michigan doctor is being sued by two different mothers, claiming the doctor was responsible for the cerebral palsy and other diseases that their babies developed.
An attorney for the two women said that both of them were pregnant eight years ago and arrived at a Port Huron, Michigan, hospital in the middle of the night, according to WDIV in Detroit.
The lawyer says that the on-duty doctor, Dr Jeanie Rowe, refused to see them and made the women wait.
Because of this delay, the
cerebral palsy attorney claims that the babies suffered birth injuries.
"Both babies were born very sick from lack of adequate oxygen, lack of adequate blood supply. Both developed severe brain damage, cerebral palsy and severe mental retardation," he told the news source.
Eight years later, one child has died and the other can barely speak and is wheelchair-bound.
The
birth injury lawyer says that an emergency cesarean should have been performed on both women but they were forced to wait.
Sherry Sheleny, Port Huron Hospital media relations representative, released a brief statement.
"It is hospital policy not to discuss matters that may be related to litigation," it said.
According to United Cerebral Palsy, 800,000 people in the U.S. suffer from the neurological disorder.
