"Hospitals in Michigan Offer New CP Treatment"

A new treatment to help children living with cerebral palsy is now being offered at two hospitals in Grand Rapids, MI.
The treatment has never been offered in West Michigan before and parents of children with the disability couldn’t be happier.
Treatment Targets Children with Spasticity
For children who have spasticity, walking can be a difficult task.
Spasticity is a characteristic of cerebral palsy that affects some more than others and can have a negative impact on a child’s muscles.
Hospitals Offering Surgery
Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital (HDVCH) and Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital have joined together to enable patients living in Michigan to have access to a surgery that will reportedly greatly better their lives.
“A small incision in the child’s mid lower back opens the end of the spinal cord so I can see the nerves and selectively group them into motor and sensory nerves,” says Dr. Stanley Skarli, the main neurosurgeon who provides the surgery.
“We are cutting nerves, but they are abnormal sensory nerves not motor nerves,” Dr. Skarli reports. “In these children, usually 40 to 60 percent of the sensory nerves are abnormal.”
