$38.5 Million Awarded in Medical Malpractice Lawsuit

A jury in Stamford, CT, recently awarded the family of a boy who was born with cerebral palsy $38.5 million. The boy was born with the disability in 2003 and the award is thought to be the largest medical malpractice award in the state.

Physician Held Accountable

Dr. Corrine De Cholnoky is being held liable for not performing a Caesarean section in time during the delivery of Spencer Oram. Oram’s umbilical cord was allegedly preventing blood flow to his brain. As a result of the delay, the child was born with cerebral palsy while his twin sister, who was born earlier, is healthy.

Family Files Suit

Spencer Oram is now living with cerebral palsy due to the botched delivery. The award given to the family includes $30 million to cover the past and future costs of the care Spencer will need, $7.5 million to compensate for any pain her has suffered and one million to his parents.
