"$14 Million Settlement of Cerebral Palsy Case in Illinois"
June 5, 2007
A settlement was reached on May 29th that gives $14 million to the family of a Chicago boy whose cerebral palsy was allegedly due to a mistake by Northwestern Memorial Hospital staff during his birth in 2002.
Seven Minutes with No Oxygen
Peter Vlachos is now five, and his family's lawyer says that Peter will never be able to walk or talk. He suffered a 7-minute-long lapse in oxygen intake during his delivery at Prentice Women's Hospital, when his mother's obstetrician and nurse apparently mixed up his mother's pulse rate and his heart rate. Because of this monitoring error, the family's lawsuit contended, the staff did not realized that Peter was in fetal distress, and they were not prepared to properly resuscitate him after his delivery, when he was already blue and limp.
Cerebral Palsy, Spastic Quadriplegia
The family's attorney, Kurt Lloyd, said that Peter's parents were pleased with the settlement: "They are very relieved…now they can provide for Peter for the rest of his life." He suffers from spastic quadriplegia and cerebral palsy. His mother, Georgiann Vlachos, had had no prior complications with her pregnancy with Peter, and she has had two healthy babies since Peter's birth.
