An English hospital that allowed a cerebral palsy patient to suffocate when his head became trapped between the bars on his bed was made to pay £90,000 in damages and fines.
Kyle Flack, who suffered from cerebral palsy, was supposed to have special bumpers put on his bed to protect him from the bed's rails but the staff at Basildon Hospital used bumpers that were too short, according to the Daily Mail.
Flack, who was a quadriplegic in addition to having cerebral palsy, was found with his head trapped between the rails by a staffer serving breakfast. Despite the efforts of the hospital staff, they were unable to save the 20-year-old's life. He had only been in the hospital for two days at the time of the accident.
Gillian Flack, Kyle's adopted mother, was obviously distraught over the incident.
"My son couldn't call for help, he had a horrendous death, and nobody went to his room. I have to live with the fact I put him in that hospital," she told the news source.
About 10,000
babies will develop cerebral palsy every year in America, according to the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
