"Health Care System Lacking Access
"

Reports claim that the death toll for infants is higher in the United States than from any war throughout history.

Statistics show that in 2003 alone, 27, 995 newborns died in the U.S. before their first birthday.

U.S. Ranked High for Infant Mortality Rate

The March of Dimes recently ranked 30 countries in order according to their infant mortality rate.

America was ranked 28 with a mortality rate of 6.8 per 1,000 live births.

Researchers believe that aside from contributing factors such as low birth weight and maternal complications, the lack of good health care may be the reason for the high number of infant deaths.

Need for Better Health Care

“Better health and education for women before they become pregnant can optimize health when conception occurs, explains Janice E. Whitty, the director of the Division of Maternal Fetal Medicine at Meharry Medical College.

According to researchers, women with HIV, diabetes and other serious health issues, don’t receive the health care they should under the present health care system.

The Risk for Premature Birth

Although premature births don’t always kill infants, their dramatic effects can often leave life altering repercussions on the child.

The U.S. is also facing an increase in premature births, which are leaving many babies with disabilities like cerebral palsy and other developmental disorders.
