Florida Cuts Funding for those with Disabilities

The Medicaid program in Florida is reportedly threatening to cut aid to people living with developmental disabilities, such as cerebral palsy. These funding cuts are causing fear in families with disabled children living.

State Attempts to Get out of Debt

According to reports, lawmakers are requiring Florida’s Agency for Persons with Disabilities to reformulate their Medicaid waiver program. The waiver program benefits children with cerebral palsy. They are supposedly requesting that the agency do this in an attempt to get out of a $153 million deficit. However, lawmakers are assuring the families of the disabled that they will be qualified to receive institutionalized care under the revised program.

Advocates Protest

Advocates throughout the state of Florida, and the country as a whole, are voicing their anger regarding this new system and worry that it will push many disabled children into institutions at a time when there is a nationwide trend against institutionalizing those with disabilities. “It’s just a mess and people are panicking,” says Martha Barrera, senior attorney of the statewide Advocacy Center for People with Disabilities.
