Family Hopes TheraSuit Will Help Son With CP

The parents of a three-year-old boy who is living with cerebral palsy are hoping that a form of therapy will help their child gain better control over his muscles. Jason Drozdyk was born with cerebral palsy and struggles to hold his head up and straighten his legs.

TheraSuit Method

The Drozdyk’s tried several forms of therapy before being introduced to the TheraSuit Method. This method of therapy is a three week program that includes intensive exercises designed to help increase the strength and coordination of the patient’s muscles. “There are no limits for Jason, but he has to do all of the work. Why should I set limits for him, because he has cerebral palsy?” says the boy’s mother, Kim. The TheraSuit is an orthotic device that’s connected to elastic bands that can be connected to a series of weights. Weights help to stretch the body and properly align it. “It’s really hard-core resistance training,” explains occupational therapist Harold Lampert. The suit therapy was initially used in the Russian space program and was developed to counteract the deterioration of bone mass and muscle, which can be caused by long periods weightlessness.

Parents Find Therapy to be Helpful

Typically, patients are encouraged to endure three hours of intensive therapy using the TheraSuit for five days a week. These sessions are followed by two to three months of rest time. “It’s amazing,” says Kim Drozdyk, “so many parents out there have no clue it’s right here.” (Source: Tampa Bay) Do you have a child who is living with cerebral palsy?
