"Reference Guide for Those With Disabilities"
September 5, 2007
The Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has published a new Reference Guide for those living with a disability in the United States.
This guide outlines the current legal requirements that are in place for people with disabilities.
Accommodating the Disabled
Being the first of a series of disability-related guidelines produced by FEMA, the Reference Guide for Accommodating Individuals with Disabilities in the Provision of Disaster Mass Care, Housing and Human Services will help the disabled and their care-takers to be prepared in case of a disaster.
According to officials, the reference guide is meant to serve as a tool for emergency planners, responders and government agencies when they are helping those during a time of crisis.
“FEMA is committed to ensuring that its programs and emergency operations meet the needs of people with disabilities,” explains FEMA Administrator R. David Paulison.
What Does the Reference Guide Do?
The Reference Guide gives a summary of the requirements needed for people with disabilities to have equal access during emergencies within the Disaster Mass Care, Housing, and Human Services functions.
FEMA officials say it is the first step in a comprehensive initiative to provide those living in the United States with disabilities, proper care.
In accordance with the Reference Guide, those with special needs will be given guidance regarding emergency management activities, sheltering, transportation, and communications.
