Budget Cuts in FL Target Disability Programs
April 25, 2007
Legislators in Florida are proposing to cut the state’s $800 million Medicare voucher program by $150-200 million, affecting thousands of people suffering from developmental disabilities such as cerebral palsy, autism, and Down syndrome.
Opponents of the budget cuts are concerned that this move will tear apart families by forcing disabled patients who are treated at home into institutions. A group of over 600 disabled Floridians and their families protested at the state’s Capitol this month, armed with umbrellas requesting the government dip into the “rainy day” funds to help save the Medicare programs.
Florida State Governor Charlie Christ failed to make promises at the rally, despite claims that he hopes to continue funding the disability programs. “We are committed to helping you as much as we can,” said Christ.
Currently, state representatives are in the process of negotiating some sort of compromise.
