Computers Benefit Patients with CP

Cerebral palsy is a disability that, in certain cases, makes it difficult to control body motion and can even take away a child’s ability to walk. However, recent reports show that computers can help keep children with cerebral palsy on their feet.

Cerebral Palsy Worsens in Boy

Alex Weinstein was born with cerebral palsy and his parents claim that his condition began to worsen as he grew older and he eventually became confined to a wheelchair. “I was always falling at school and at home,” explains Alex. Dr. David Schafer, from the Hospital for Special Surgery, says that he was sure surgery would be helpful but didn’t know what area to target. He finally decided that motion analysis, which is done using a computer, was the only treatment that would truly be beneficial.

The Benefit of Motion Analysis

In motion analysis, digital cameras are used to record reflective markers that are taped to the body before information is sent to the computer. After Alex received the operation his parents say that it was as if he had new, straight legs. (Source: Healthy Balance) Do you have a child who was born with cerebral palsy?
