"Researchers Find Link Between CP and Child Obesity"
November 13, 2007
Researchers are investigating a link that was recently found between children with cerebral palsy and obesity.
Reports claim that more children are obese in the United States than ever before.
Researchers say that this growing epidemic with children is putting them at risk for adulthood.
Studies Conducted
Children who are living with cerebral palsy can sometimes be more at risk than their developing peers due to their genetic propensity to be overweight and the lack of physical activities that are available to them.
James H. Rimmer, who covered a commentary on the subject in the Journal of Adolescent Health, and his colleagues conducted studies that showed that children with spina bifida, cerebral palsy and other disabilities have a higher reported prevalence of being overweight than children without disabilities.
“The substantial physical, social, and attitudinal barriers experienced by many youth with disabilities presents a challenge to health professionals and researchers to find innovative ways to reduce, or prevent, obesity in this undeserved and marginalized population,” states the published commentary.
Lack of Exercise Important Factor
From the studies, Rimmer concluded that better programs and strategies need to be developed for children with disabilities that go beyond a typical school day.
