Communicating With Cerebral Palsy Patients

For many people, communicating with disabled people can be a challenge. People can feel awkward at how to act around disabled people, and The United Cerebral Palsy Association has given advice for people that are unsure of what is appropriate around disabled people. A few tips included speaking directly to that person with cerebral palsy or another disability instead of through another person or signs. Upon meeting someone for the first time it is customary to shake his/her hand and it should be no different with a cerebral palsy patient. Treating an adult cerebral palsy patient like an adult should be exercised and treat them like you would anyone else in the room present with you. People should not be afraid or embarrassed to address cerebral palsy patients with slang and expressions.
