Utah Man Accused of Starving Child with CP

A trial is currently underway for the man who allegedly abused a little girl while her mother was serving in Iraq. Although the man has requested a trial without jury, the prosecutors did not adhere to his wishes and wanted a jury to hear the case.

The Accusations

Michael James Bowden, a 26-year-old from Salt Lake City, is being accused of starving his girlfriend's five-year-old daughter who suffers from cerebral palsy. The girl's mother, Anahi Ferrando, gave Bowden legal custody of her daughter Jade when she was deployed to Iraq. When Jade's grandfather stopped at the house for an unexpected visit, he found that his granddaughter had been starved and was only 13 pounds. Bowden was charged with second-degree felony child abuse.

Grandfather Saves Child

Jade's grandfather immediately took her to the Primary Children's Medical Center to receive treatment and obtained ex parte custody of the child until Ferrando returned. Less than a month later, Jade's mother returned from Iraq to care for her daughter and filed suit. (Source: Salt Lake Tribune) Do you know someone with cerebral palsy who has been abused?
