" Scuba Lessons Given to Children with CP"
January 29, 2008
The CentraState Healthcare System in New Jersey recently started a program that teaches children with CP how to swim and scuba dive.
Kids participating in the six-week sessions are not only taught the basics of swimming but are instructed on scuba diving techniques by certified divers.
Children Learn and Build Confidence
Two certified divers from the Professional Association of Diving Instructors, Stewart Snyder and Ray Ruffini began the program in early January, catering it towards children suffering from autism, Down syndrome and cerebral palsy.
“We were amazed that kids that were land-bound…once they got in the water, they were set free,” explains Snyder.
Classes Prove to be Effective
According to the instructors, each student will learn the swimming basics, from how to become comfortable in the pool to how to safely put their heads under the water.
“Water is a powerful tool,” says Ellen Stein the fitness director at the Fitness and Wellness Center, where the classes take place.
