Cerebral Palsy education still lacking despite its high prevalence
January 26, 2005
Cerebral palsy affects more than 764,000 U.S. children and adults, but still some people think cerebral palsy is a disease. In fact, cerebral palsy is a condition that about 8,000 babies and infants are diagnosed with every year, and an additional 1,200 to 1,500 preschool age children are recognized to have one or more symptoms of cerebral palsy.
The condition is a term used to describe a group of chronic conditions affecting body movement and muscle coordination. When one or more specific areas of the brain are damaged, cerebral palsy is suffered. Most often, cerebral palsy will be suffered during fetal development, before, during or shortly after birth, or during infancy.
