"
Two Brothers with Cerebral Palsy Found Dead "

November 12, 2008

On the morning of Nov. 8 in Visalia, California, Angel Camarillo, 10, and his brother Jorge, 2, were found dead in their bed. Their grief-stricken parents, Angelino Camarillo and Roberta Morales, said the boys were fine the night before when they went to bed. Visalia police are investigating the deaths since they occurred on the same night.

Cerebral Palsy and Gluteric Aciduria

Angel and Jorge both had cerebral palsy and an inherited enzyme deficiency disorder called gluteric aciduria, in which the body is not able to process some proteins adequately. Their father, a farm worker, said that the boys were treated every three to six months at a children's hospital in Madera, California.

Very Late to Bed

The family lives in a home on East Houston Avenue in Visalia, a city of about 120,000 residents in the San Joaquin Valley, roughly 200 miles north of Los Angeles. Camarillo said Morales and he and their sons went to a church service the night before in Farmersville and got home about midnight. He said the boys went to bed at about two in the morning, and that they seemed fine.

Environmental Problems Part of Investigation

Camarillo found them the next morning at about 9 a.m., unresponsive and apparently dead.

The family called the police, and the fire/ambulance personnel responded quickly but were unable to revive the boys, each of whom appeared to have vomited.

Visalia police Sgt. Jim Carr said that there was no evidence of trauma to the boys, and that no arrests had been made.

He acknowledged that environmental problems were part of the police investigation of the deaths, and he stated that an autopsy would be conducted for each boy; the results are expected later this week.

Angel Camarillo was a student in a program for the severely disabled. He and Jorge were their parents' only children.
