"Botox May Help Cerebral Palsy Patients Walk "

January 31, 2007

The popular injectable cosmetic enhancement product shows promise to help patients with cerebral palsy increase their range of motion and muscle control.

Five-year-old Lucia Thompson suffers from cerebral palsy. Her parents learned about the new Botox therapy while watching TV. They quickly applied to receive the treatment, and were accepted by a hospital 50 miles away that performed the procedure.

Lucia's father, Mark, 30, said, “It has been our dream for her to be able to run about and play with Caitlin and their pals.

“Lucia was diagnosed with cerebral palsy when she was two and has never been able to walk properly. She always tries her best to keep up but it's tough for her. It is upsetting to see, as you so want the best for your kids.”

The TV Delivers Hope

“We were stunned,” said Mark Thompson, “when we saw what a difference these Botox injections could make.”

Cerebral palsy often affects fine motor skills as well as flexibility and muscle development.

“We saw how the treatment had helped kids do things for the first time, like hold pens and run, things they'd never been able to do before,” said Mark.

The Botox injections work by blocking certain nerve signals, and by reducing muscle tightness. This can improve development, control, and coordination, making it easier for patients to walk or move.

The treatment will require painful injections every few months, but that is a small price to pay for patients who have been told they will never be able to walk.

Megan Tucker was told just this, but has taken her first steps ever after starting the Botox treatment.

Her father Scott said, “It's worked wonders. Megan is great now and leads almost a normal life.”
