New technology has reportedly helped a boy living with
cerebral palsy stay on his feet and walk better. The boy was born with the disability and until he received a new form of therapy, his condition was getting worse.
Boy’s Condition Worsens
Alex Weinstein was born with cerebral palsy and according to his parents and various teachers, his disability seemed to be getting progressively worse as he got older.
“He seemed to get shorter and shorter as he was getting older because his legs were bowing more,’ says his mother, Shelley Weinstein.
Even Alex became increasingly aware of his condition, telling doctors that he was “always falling at school and at home.” Due to his physical problems, Alex and his family became concerned that he may one day have to rely on a wheelchair.
Motion Analysis Implemented
The Weinstein’s took Alex to the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City where they met with Dr. David Scher regarding an operation that could help. Although Scher wasn’t initially aware of where on the legs and feet he would operate, he did know that an advanced technology known as
motion analysis could help.
Reflective markers were put on Alex’s body that sends information to a computer so doctors are able to get 360-degree analysis of his body. This enabled Dr. Scher to pinpoint exactly where he needed to operate and Alex’s legs and feet were rotated in addition to his hip muscles and hamstrings being lengthened.
After having surgery, Alex has reportedly grown taller and is starting to move better and faster with each day.
