BRAIN INJURY

Every 21 seconds a person in the U.S. suffers a traumatic brain injury, with 1.5 million Americans sustaining a traumatic brain injury each year. The severity of a brain injury can vary greatly and affect a life dramatically. Since each area of the brain controls certain processes, the specific location of the brain injury, alongside its severity, will determine how much the individual is affected.

Brain Injury Damage

A brain injury causes damage to the neuron, nerve tract, or sections of the brain. When neurons and nerve tracts have been damaged by the brain injury it can greatly alter the cognitive functions of that person since they will have difficulty carrying the messages that tell the brain what to do.

The brain injury patient may experience changes in the way they

  • Think
  • Act
  • Feel
  • Move
  • As well as changes to their internal bodily functions.

Reasons for Brain Injury

Brain injury can occur in many different ways. A direct blow to the head can cause a brain injury, an outside force impact the head causing a brain injury, or a rapid acceleration and deceleration can cause the brain injury when it moves inside the skull quickly. A car accident is a large contributor to suffering a brain injury, in addition to falls and sports injuries.

When a brain injury has been suffered because of negligence from another party, a brain injury lawyer should be consulted. Some people will be forever changed because of a brain injury and may need to seek intensive brain injury treatment and even relearn seemingly simple everyday tasks. A brain injury lawyer will advise clients of their legal rights and options.
