Sometimes birth defects occur for no apparent reason. Birth defects are the leading cause of infant mortality in the U.S., includes about 8,000 babies of the 120,000 babies born will die during their first year. Around 70% of all birth defects have an unknown cause, but some birth defects are arguably caused by medical mistakes. In the U.S., birth defects are attributed with over 20% of all infant deaths.
There have been disputes over certain elements, that pregnant mothers have been exposed to, that are more likely to cause birth defects. Over the years, certain medications taken by pregnant women have resulted in a high number of birth defects. Birth injury lawsuits have stemmed from the exposure of harmful elements that have been the cause of countless birth injuries.
Birth Defect Study
An American study has found that children born after fertility treatment are more likely to suffer a range of birth defects. In the October 9, 2003 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine a study reported that in the first three months of pregnancy- pregnancy tests performed could catch most cases of two particular birth defects, including Down syndrome and trisomy 18. As more information is made available, better ways to prevent and help treat birth defects will hopefully decrease the number of afflicted children and families.
